Law No. 6 of 2011 on Immigration

Summary

Law 6/2011 governs the movement of people into and out of Indonesia: travel documents, visas, entry stamps, stay permits (including the limited stay permit, ITAS, and the permanent stay permit, ITAP), supervision of foreigners, administrative action, detention, travel bans and entry bans, and criminal provisions.

For foreign investors and foreign employees, this Law is the basis of the KITAS (limited stay permit card) and its extension, change of stay permit status, and the obligations of the sponsor. Technical rules are in PP 31/2013, amended several times, most recently by PP 40/2023. Work visas and the ITAP also rest on this Law. The Law itself has been amended by Law 63/2024 and the Job Creation framework.
